The past year of new trailers and gameplay have undeniably been a bumpy road for Sonic Frontiers, but with launch approaching in just under a month, we now have a better sense of what players can expect when Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy are sucked through a mysterious wormhole and separated from one another. After nearly five years since the last attempt at a 3D Sonic title, Sonic Team has returned with a brand new vision for the speedy blue hedgehog that looks to take advantage of what worked so well for The Legend of Zelda, Grand Theft Auto and many others before it: the freedom of open world gaming.įirst announced nearly a year ago at the Game Awards, the promise of an open world Sonic game raised many questions for casual and passionate Sonic fans. They haven’t always been miserable to play, as fan favorites like Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Colors have overcome the hurdles in ways that Sonic 2006 and others have repeatedly stumbled over, but even the stronger entries have never laid a clear path forward for how Sonic games can survive in the 21st century without returning to its 2D roots like in Sonic Mania. For most of its existence, Sonic the Hedgehog has struggled to adapt to the arrival and evolution of 3D gaming.
